Matters

The folder every piece of work is filed into — documents, requests, conversations and signatures, one scope each.

A contract review is never really one task. It has a client, a counterparty, a deadline, three earlier drafts, a colleague who knows the history, and an email thread nobody can find. A matter is the container that holds all of it in one place, so the work stops living in scattered chats and starts living somewhere a team can pick it up.

Where to look: Matters in the Work zone of the left rail, between Intake and Requests. Work arrives at intake, becomes a matter, and is worked as requests against that matter.

Why file work at all

Filing is the difference between an assistant that answers a question and a workspace that remembers the answer. Once a conversation is in a matter:

  • Its documents are findable by anyone on the matter, not just whoever ran the chat.
  • A conflict check can see the client and counterparty by name.
  • The dates the deal turns on sit on the record instead of in someone's calendar.
  • "Everything for Acme" becomes a real question with a real answer.
