Matter types & checklists
Your workspace's own categories, the starter requests they open with, and what archiving one does.
Matter types are the workspace's list of the kinds of work it handles — "Non-disclosure agreement", "Acquisition", "Commercial lease". Every matter is filed under one, and the list is yours, not ours.
By the end you'll know how to define types, attach starter requests to them, and what happens to existing work when a type is archived.
This is for owners and managers, under Settings → Matters.
Define your list

Each type has a name and an optional one-line description — "Mutual and one-way confidentiality agreements, either paper." The description shows in the list and helps everyone file work the same way.
Types can be renamed, reordered and archived. Order is worth caring about: the order here is the order in the picker, so putting your three most common types at the top saves a scroll on every matter anyone opens.
Starter requests
A type can carry a starter checklist — one request title per line, up to twenty:
Disclosure schedule
Board resolutions
Regulatory filingA new matter of that type then offers to create them as real requests. The wording in settings is deliberate: offered, never automatic. The offer appears on the matter's Overview and does nothing until someone accepts it.
Write starters as the work, not as reminders — "Draft the disclosure schedule" reads as a request someone can pick up; "Disclosure schedule?" doesn't.
Types scope skills too
A skill can be scoped to specific matter types, so "rank findings by risk and cite the clause number" can apply to contract review without firing on everything else. Skills scoped this way need at least one type to exist first.
Archiving keeps history honest
Archiving removes a type from the picker for new work but leaves it on matters that already carry it. A matter classified last quarter doesn't silently become unclassified because the category was retired this quarter. Archived types sit under their own heading and can be restored.
Types created from intake
An intake proposal can suggest a matter type that doesn't exist yet. It is marked as new on the proposal, and approving asks you to confirm it by name before anything is added — the workspace's list can't grow silently because a model inferred a category from an email.
